Coronavirus / COVID 19: Your Family Needs a Plan, Part 2

By Chris Tymchuck
Founding Attorney

As the news about the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus / COVID 19 becomes increasingly scary and stressful, many of us are looking for ways to protect ourselves and our loved ones. We all need to feel we have some control as things get more chaotic and uncontrollable.

So, take control of the things you can, now. I am not a medical professional so will NOT offer advice on how to protect your physical selves. But, as a Minnesota estate planning lawyer with years of experience, I can tell you that clients feel safer, calmer and more in control when they put an estate plan in place.

It really will bring you some peace of mind during the chaos created by the pandemic to know that you’ve taken care of legally listing someone to make medical decisions for you. It will help to make sure you’ve listed the people you would want to be guardians of your minor children if you are not here.

It will reduce some of your burden to know you have spoken with your parents, or other seniors in your life, about their wishes and assisted them with putting a plan in place. So, talk to your parents, spouses, adult children, neighbors, or anyone else important. Ask if they have a medical health care directive choosing someone to intervene, and advocate, for them with medical professionals. Or that you have all chosen a trusted person to handle your financial matters if you are unable to do so.

Please note my practice has a unique set up to allow clients to work with us remotely to get this done without coming into our office.
