Guardianship Mediation

Is your family in conflict over decisions concerning the care of your aging parents?

Conflicts, difficulties, and indecision often arise between elder adults and their children, or among the adult children caring for elderly parents.  Families frequently find it difficult reach agreement on many decisions concerning aging parental care issues.  Elder care mediation can provide a comfortable, safe and neutral setting for family members to meet to discuss and attempt to resolve any disputes.  As a certified elder care mediator, I can guide family discussions to help all the parties involved plan for how best to deal with the many issues that may exist or arise, including:

  • Health & medical care decisions
  • Caregiving
  • Financial decisions & management
  • Living arrangements
  • Communication issues
  • Decision-making
  • Personal and household care & maintenance
  • End of life decisions
  • Estate planning

Too often, the family ignores the situation as solutions seem impossible.  Elder care mediation provides the assistance and structure for successful resolutions to difficult family situations.  Through this process, both the adult children and the aging parent can voice their feelings and concerns.  Then, the family can focus on problem-solving and working together to develop strategies to address those needs and concerns.  Any decisions reached must be agreeable to all involved, which means they can become acceptable and long-lasting solutions versus a court decision, which will not allow for family input in crafting a solution.

It's important to remember that as a elder care mediator I:

  • am neutral in all discussions and decision-making
  • am trained in the resolution of eldercare issues
  • help the family establish a framework for effective communication
  • listen closely and help the family identify and clarify issues
  • allow every family member to be heard
  • help the family create their own long-term agreements

If you are interested in elder care mediation services, ask your mediator about their training and experience in this specialized practice. Chris is a certified elder care mediator and has conducted many successful elder mediation sessions.

ALWAYS ASK YOUR MEDIATOR IF THEY HAVE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE IN ELDERCARE CASES!  It is one of the most difficult types of dispute to assist towards resolution.
